SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Portland used a late 16-0 run to overcome a 12-point second half deficit and defeat the Incarnate Word Cardinals 77-68 in the final game of the Incarnate Word Tournament hosted at the McDermott Center.
Portland has already eclipsed last season's win total while the team's 7-2 start matches the 2014-15 team for the program's best nine-game start in the last decade.
Mike Meadows finished with a career-high 22 points, Tyler Robertson had 16 points and Moses Wood, Chris Austin and Chika Nduka added 10 points apiece. Wood has now reached double figures scoring in all nine games for the Pilots.
It was freshman Matija Svetozarevic that came up huge in the final 10 minutes hitting a three-pointer, grabbing three rebounds and playing solid defense. The Pilots (7-2) outscored the Cardinals by 20 points during his run to secure the victory.
Portland led by 15 early but went more than 11 minutes without a field goal in the closing minutes of the first half through the beginning of the second half. Incarnate Word found a groove and used a 20-2 run out of halftime as the Pilots missed their first seven field goal attempts, committed seven turnovers and missed two front end 1-and-1's before Wood broke the skid with a three-pointer at the 10:56 mark.
Portland would go on a 27-3 run to take control and benefited from some Cardinals mistakes. After converting a pair of field goals, the Pilots were gifted four free throws when UIW committed a backcourt foul on Robertson and got a technical foul in scrum that followed. Robertson and Meadows each hit two from the line and then Meadows followed with a three to take a 57-56 lead. Svetozarevic then drilled a three from the top of the key to cap a 16-0 run and Portland never looked back.
The game appeared headed for a blowout in the early going as the Pilots jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the first four minutes as Matheus Silveira dominated the stretch with six points and six rebounds. The margin grew to 18-3 as Robertson and Meadows knocked down three-pointers, but Incarnate Word found a flow on offense cut the margin to 37-31 at the half.
Portland shot 44 percent overall and made 26-of-29 free throws, while UIW finished at 40 percent and 10-of-13 at the foul line. The Pilots committed 19 turnovers, but gained a 16-5 edge in fast break points.
Portland will return home for finals week on campus before hosting VMI on Friday evening at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with radio coverage on 910 ESPN Portland (KMTT) and live video on the WCC Network. Tickets are available by visiting PortlandPilots.com/Tickets.
