PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (6-1, 0-0 WCC) extended their winning streak to four with their 70-49 victory over the Warner Pacific Knights (2-2, 1-0 CCC). The Pilots are now 6-1, their best record through seven games since the 1996-97 season.
Alex Fowler was the leading scorer for Portland with 19 points as well as nine rebounds. Maddie Muhlheim and Fowler were the only two Pilots to eclipse double digits, with Muhlheim scoring 11 points with three makes from beyond the arc. Portland saw 11 different players score on the night.
Courtney Jackson and Alexa Mee were the leading scorers for the Knights with 11 each. Kylie Guelsdorf led all rebounders as well with 13. The Pilots clamped down on the Knights' shooters, holding Warner Pacific to just 2-of-18 from three. The game does not go against Warner Pacific's record as it was an exhibition for the Knights.
Portland rushed out to a big lead early, going up 17-4 by the first media timeout. They outpaced the Knights significantly in the first quarter, but Warner Pacific bounced back in the second and stayed within range. After the lead eroded to single digits, the Pilots outscored Warner Pacific 14-6 to lead 43-26 at the half.
The Pilots put the game to bed in the third quarter with their stifling defense. They held the Knights to just eight points in the quarter while scoring 19 themselves. Portland held strong in the fourth quarter to take the win.
Portland started fast and didn't slow down throughout the game. They had 18 fastbreak points on the night. They also did well sharing the rock, tallying 21 assists. This is the fifth game this year where they've posted at least 20 assists.
The Pilots were able to score so quickly because of their efforts defensively. Portland forced 40 turnovers and earned 27 steals, just three shy of their record for steals in a game. They scored 41 points off turnovers.
