SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite a valiant effort, the Portland Pilots (9-6-1, 3-2-1 WCC) fell to the No. 20 Santa Clara Broncos (11-1-3, 5-0-1 WCC) in California 3-1. Sebastian Nava scored the lone goal for the Pilots, while Damani Osei, Oladayo Thomas and Eduardo Lopez Perez scored the goals for the Broncos.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara scored in the first minute of the match off a set piece. Kevin Bonilla was given a yellow card on a foul outside the box and Javier Ruiz Duran played a pass into the goal for Damani Osei. Osei finished to make it 1-0 early.
- The Broncos added to their lead in the 49th minute. A handball in the box turned into a penalty kick for the Broncos, a kick that Oladayo Thomas finished with ease. They led 2-0 early in the second half.
- The Pilots put themselves in position to equalize in the 68th minute. Gurman Sangha was taken down in the box, leading to a penalty kick for Portland. Sebastian Nava took the shot for the Pilots and delivered, bringing them within one.
- But the Broncos extended their lead a few minutes later. In the 73rd minute, Thomas played a low cross to Eduardo Lopez Perez in the box. Lopez Perez finished with a rolling shot past Pilot keeper George Tasouris, putting the game out of reach for Portland.
- The Pilots pushed at the end with three shots in the final 10 minutes, but it wasn't enough. They would fall 3-1.
