STOCKTON, CALIF. – The Portland Pilots (9-8-0, 5-4-0 WCC) ended the regular season on a high note, shutting out and defeating the Pacific Tigers (10-6-3, 2-5-2 WCC) 2-0 in Stockton. Nedya Sawan scored both the goals for the Pilots.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED
- After a fairly even start, the Pilots struck first with a goal in the 38th minute. Sophia Mattice played a perfect ball into the box for Nedya Sawan, who headed it in for the first goal.
- The Pilots were aggressive in attacking the goal in both halves, taking 11 shots and putting five of them on frame.
- Sawan extended Portland's lead in the 80th minute. She sliced her way through the Pacific back line to score an unassisted goal and put the score at its final of 2-0.
PILOT POINTS
- Sawan's goals were her 11th and 12th of the season. Her 12 goals this year were the most since Taryn Ries scored 15 during the 2018 season.
- Sawan is just the third Pilot since 2012 to score 10 goals or more in a season.
- Mattice's assist is her second off a set piece and her third of the season. That puts her at first in assists on the Pilots.
- The shutout is the eighth of the season for goalkeeper Bre Norris, tied for the most for the Pilots since 2018.
- It is the second time in head coach Michelle French's four years as head coach of the Pilots that they have finished the season above .500.
