TEMPE, Ariz. – Portland guard Chris Austin scored a game-high 22 points and Mike Meadows added 16 points, but Arizona State pulled out a 76-60 decision Tuesday night at Desert Financial Arena.
Head coach Shantay Legans made his debut with a revamped Portland roster, but the Pilots were without starting forward Tyler Robertson who was a late scratch due to injury. Portland committed 15 first half turnovers as a completely new roster made its regular season debut.
Despite the giveaways, the Pilots trailed by just a 31-25 margin at the half due to strong defense and rebounding. Both teams found their offensive rhythm in the second period as ASU erupted for 45 second half points to pull away.
Moses Wood added 12 points and freshman Vasilije Vucinic matched Meadows with a team-high seven rebounds. Jack Perry dished out a team-best six assists. Freshman Chika Nduka made a big contribution in 24 minutes off the bench at both ends of the court.
ASU took advantage of 15 first half Portland turnovers and pushed out to a 24-13 lead midway through the period. The Pilots battled back and used a 9-0 run sparked by an Austin dunk and Kristian Sjolund three-pointer. Austin and Meadows then made back-to-back buckets to make it a 26-25 deficit. ASU got a three from Bagley and then Marreon Jackson got a backcourt steal and hit a 15-footer at the buzzer to take a 31-25 lead into halftime.
Kimani Lawrence made back-to-back layups to open the second half for the Sun Devils and give ASU a 10-point lead. Portland kept within striking distance until the Sun Devils pushed ahead by 18 with under four minutes remaining.
Lawrence recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace five Sun Devils in double figures.
Portland shot 41 percent from the field and ASU finished at 47 percent overall. The Pilots finished the game with 21 turnovers, but forced 19 from the Sun Devils.
Portland will now return home for a pair of doubleheaders with the women's basketball team on Thursday and Saturday. The men welcome Willamette on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Alcorn State on Saturday at 5 p.m. All Pilot games are live on the radio on 910 ESPN Portland (KMTT) and live video coverage for both games will be on the WCC Network.
