RESNO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (10-2, 0-0 WCC) ended non-conference play on a high note, beating the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-7, 0-0 MWC) 67-50 in Fresno. With the win, the Pilots claim their best non-conference record since the 2007-08 season, when they went 10-5 before conference play.
Alex Fowler was the leading scorer for the Pilots with 17 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Fowler was one of four Pilots to break double-digits today, with Haylee Andrews adding 11 and Lucy Cochrane and Emme Shearer adding 10.
Andrews once again stuffed the stat sheet with a quality all-around performance. She was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and also had seven assists. This is the fourth game this year where Andrews has posted at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. She also tied Amy Claboe for 10
th all-time in career points at 1,354.
Cochrane had another solid defensive game with four blocks. It's the seventh time this season that Cochrane has posted at least four blocks in a game .
Hailey Cavinder was the star for the Bulldogs, putting up 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists against the Pilots. Portland, however, held the Bulldogs under 40% shooting, marking the eighth time they've done so to an opponent this season.
The first quarter was a fast-paced back-and-forth affair with both teams trying to push the ball down the floor quickly. Fresno State forced some misses early against Portland and pushed their lead to five halfway through the second quarter. But the Pilots bounced back in the latter half of the quarter, putting together an 11-0 run in the final five minutes to take a 32-26 lead at the half.
The Pilots stayed strong defensively to start the second half. They held the Bulldogs without a bucket for eight minutes from the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the third and pushed their lead to double-digits before Hailey Cavinder hit a three to cut Portland's lead to eight.
The Bulldogs forced some early turnovers and cut the lead to six for the Pilots, but the Pilots stayed poised and eventually pushed the lead to double-digits. Fowler scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter and Portland had a 11-0 run as they game wound down that gave them the win.
The Pilots had their best three-point shooting game of the season, making 37.5% of their threes. Portland also had another quality passing game with 19 assists. They also won the battles inside just slightly, outscoring the Bulldogs 36-26 in the paint and outrebounding Fresno State 40-34.
