DAVIS, Calif. – Moses Wood scored a team-high 18 points and Mike Meadows buried four second half three-pointers as Portland erased a 12-point second half deficit for a 65-60 win at UC Davis Wednesday afternoon at the University Credit Union Center. The Pilots close non-conference play with a 9-6 overall record, while the Aggies drop to 6-4 on the season.
Wood scored 16 of his points in the first half and hit two late free throws to ice the game, while all 12 of Meadows' points game in the second stanza. Meadows added a game-high six assists, while Tyler Robertson chipped in 13 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer and two important free throws down the stretch.
Ezra Manjon scored a game-high 20 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists for UC Davis, while Caleb Fuller added 17 points.
UC Davis opened the second half with an 11-0 run to jump out to a 45-33 lead and the Pilots were forced to call a timeout. Robertson drilled a three-pointer out of the huddle and then the Pilots locked down on defense as they chipped away at the deficit.
Matheus Silveira converted back-to-back layups and Meadows hit a pair of threes to make it a 49-48 deficit midway through the period. He then buried his third three-pointer of the half to tie the game at 53 with 7:38 left in regulation. The Pilots took their first lead of the second half on a Robertson corner three on a dish from Meadows to go up 56-53.
UC Davis tied it with a Fuller three-pointer and then Robertson and Manjon traded layups. Meadows then hit another triple with 3:32 to go for a 61-58 edge and the Pilots would hold the Aggies to just one field goal in the final four minutes of regulation.
Robertson made a pair of free throws with 1:25 to go and then Manon made a driving layup with 47 seconds remaining to make it 63-60. UC Davis got a stop defensively and had a shot to tie from Fuller, but he missed and Wood corralled the rebound with eight seconds on the clock. He calmly converted both free throws and Portland escaped with the victory.
The Pilots shot 43 percent overall and limited UC Davis to 39 percent overall. Portland was 11-for-21 from three-point range compared to just 6-of-18 for the Aggies.
Wood came out aggressive offensively and made his first four field goal attends as the Pilots rushed to an early seven-point lead to start the game. UC Davis regrouped to briefly take the lead, but the Pilots responded and a Robertson three-pointer made it 25-19 Pilots at the under-8 first half timeout. Manjon then took over and gave the Aggies a lead with four straight baskets. A pair of threes from Wood late in the half gave him 16 in the period as the Pilots trailed 34-33 at the break.
Portland will take a nine-day break for the Holidays before hosting the BYU Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 1 at 7 p.m. to open West Coast Conference play.
