PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior Haylee Andrews reached 1,000 career points and sophomore Alex Fowler had a huge game with 21 points and 18 rebounds to help the Pilots overcome a second-half deficit, but the San Diego Toreros recovered and prevailed with a 69-62 win on Monday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The 18 boards are a career-high for Fowler.
The Toreros (6-4, 3-2 WCC), who rank third in the nation in steals per game, used a pressure defense all day long to cause some Portland (9-7, 6-4 WCC) turnovers, and they'd jump out to an 18-point lead in the second quarter. The Portland deficit was still 14 early in the third quarter, but that's when the Pilots re-grouped and went on a run to climb back into the game.
Fowler provided a lay-up to make the score 34-44, and Andrews followed with a lay-in to pull the Pilots within single digits for the first time since the beginning of the second period. Portland's surge continued, and when Liana Kaitu'u converted down low while getting fouled, the San Diego lead was only five.
Moments later Kaitu'u had another and-one as she scored seven straight points for the Pilots, and Keeley Frawley capped a lengthy 16-2 run with a three-pointer from the left wing that tied the score, 46-46.
The Pilots looked to be in control in the fourth quarter as Kaitu'u continued to produce, and her bucket on a nice move down low gave Portland a 54-50 edge with 7:10 remaining.
But the Toreros refused to go away, and they'd answer with their own run to jump back in front. Portland went more than four minutes during the frame without a field goal, and San Diego capitalize to lead by seven with 2:50 left.
Frawley ended the Portland drought when Andrews found her for a lay-up, and Emme Shearer connected on a much-need three to make it a four-point game with 2:27 showing on the clock. But that's close as the Pilots would get as the Toreros sealed the West Coast Conference victory.
Andrews, who entered the game with 999 career points, reached the 1,000-point plateau during the opening minutes when she buried a three to push her past the milestone. She becomes the 28th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. Her 13 points against the Toreros give her 1,012 for her career.
Fowler tops her previous career-high in rebounds by one, and she finished just shy of the UP record at the DI level of 20, which was set by Sarah Green back in 1998. It's the most rebounds by a Pilot in a game since Amy Pupa corralled 19 in 2013. Fowler also registers her third double-double of the year.
Kaitu'u collected a season-high 13 points on six of eight shooting before fouling out, and Frawley added 11 points.
Shearer handed out a career-best six assists, which was matched by Andrews for the team-high.
San Diego recorded 20 steals against the Pilots, with Myah Pace claiming seven of those. Sydney Hunter led the team with 16 points.
The Pilots are next scheduled to play on Monday, Feb. 8, when they welcome the Pacific Tigers to the Chiles Center for a WCC contest. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
