Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots took down the Seattle Redhawks 7-0 on Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The win marks Portland's third of the season as well as their second sweep.
"I think we did a good job taking care of business once again today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We're happy just to have an opportunity to play matches with all the things that come up regarding COVID, so the fact that we had two healthy teams competing was great."
The Pilots swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point, never trailing throughout those matches. Seattle was able to occasionally push Portland, but all three doubles squads for the Pilots managed to maintain solid leads throughout.
"We won in the proverbial 'winning ugly' fashion in doubles," Gross said. "I thought Seattle played with a lot of energy and those doubles sets could've gone either way."
The singles matches went just as well for Portland, with the Pilots sweeping the No. 1-3 singles matches with relative ease. Issa Yoshida clinched the victory for the Pilots with his win over Julian Worn in the No. 3 singles match. Nicklas Oberg, Nikolas Tvedt and Leo Hibi all went on to win their respective matches to officially earn the sweep. The Pilots did not lose a single set throughout the day and never trailed by more than a game in any set.
"Lefty and Issa really set the tone early in singles," Gross said. "They were both very sharp and won handily to really give us a lot of momentum. This group of guys really embodies why everyone is making such an effort to get young athletes back on the court.
"They are all so appreciative to be back on campus and being able to play the sport they love. We are really looking at this season as gravy. All the guys will be back for another year or two. Just having the opportunity to compete and get better this year is amazing for their mental health and for the health of our program for sure."
Next up, the Pilots will travel to Eugene, Ore. for a neutral site match against the Cal Poly Mustangs.
