PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Taryn Ries scored twice in the first half and again after the break to complete the hat trick as the Pilots won an exhibition match 8-0 over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. Selma Licina scored twice for Portland, and Gabi Brummett tallied a goal and two assists.
Â
Ries opened the scoring in the first minute. From the left side of the 18-yard box, she hit one into the upper right corner of the frame to hand the home side the early advantage. Moments later the score was 2-0 when Licina finished on a free kick sent in by Brummett.
Â
In the 24th minute, Brummett gained possession near the half way line and made her way up the field. She then played a perfectly timed through ball to Ries, who buried a shot into the back of the net to give the Pilots the 3-nil lead.
Â
It was then 4-0 just before halftime when a ball fell to the feet of Brummett. She hit a well-struck shot into the far side of the net, giving Portland the four-goal edge at the half.
Â
The second half began much like the first when the Pilots scored in the opening minute, with this goal coming from Licina. The Pilots were then awarded a penalty in the 57th minute, and Ries capitalized with her third goal of the day.
Â
Jamie Rita added another for the Pilots in the 65th minute when she got a slight touch on a ball sent in by MJ Roe, sending it past the keeper, and Roe capped the scoring with a goal in the 86th minute.
Â
The Pilots are scheduled to open the regular season next Saturday when they host Oregon State at Merlo Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
