CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Oregon State scored in the first half and the Portland Pilots couldn't produce the equalizer as the Beavers held on for a 1-0 win in a non-conference men's soccer match played on Monday night at Paul Lorenz Field.
Â
"Tonight will make us better in the long run as competition is what we have all been missing," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We created some moments to score but just missed the final detail. Credit to Oregon State as they made one more play than us. I was proud of our intensity and collective spirit in the second half and there are some great teaching moments for our group."
OSU's (2-0) goal came in the 25th minute, and it was scored by Gloire Amanda. Joel Walker tallied an assist on the play, and it's Amanda's third goal already on the young season.
Â
Portland (1-1) spent the next 65 minutes searching to level the score, and they nearly pulled even in the 32st minute when Alejandro Pereira hit one towards the frame. But the attempt was wide, and the Beavers claimed the one-goal edge at the half.
Â
In the second half, Jake Arteaga and Brandon Cambridge attempted shots only seconds apart in the 65th minute. Neither strike found the back of the net as the game remained 1-nil.
Â
The Pilots earned four corners on the night, including in the final minute. Cambridge was inside the area on the corner and did get a shot off, but the Beavers held on to secure the home victory.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a home match against another Pac-12 foe as Washington is scheduled to visit Merlo Field next Sunday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
