PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots women's soccer team will head to California this weekend for their WCC matchup against the San Francisco Dons. The match is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. and live video and stats can be found at PortlandPilots.com.
The Pilots are in their third season with alum Michelle French at the helm and are 2-2 to start the year. The team was picked to finish fifth in the WCC in the annual preseason coaches' poll and had one player – Taryn Ries – selected to the 2021 All-WCC Preseason Team. Ries was also a first-team selection for the All-WCC team in 2019.
The Pilots secured a 2-0 win in their most recent matchup against the Pacific Tigers, their first WCC win of the season. Goalkeeper Madison Zamora had a dominant debut with three saves and a shutout while Ries scored two goals in the match. Her two goals were good enough to earn her WCC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Ries was also recognized with the honor for putting together a hat trick in Portland's thrilling season-opening victory over the Oregon State Beavers.
Meanwhile, the Dons were slated to finish just below the Pilots at sixth in the preseason coaches' poll. They are 1-2-1 on the season with all of their matches coming against WCC opponents. Their only win came against the Pacific Tigers in their season opener on Feb. 10, which they took 1-0. They also tied the Saint Mary's Gaels 1-1 on Feb. 14 and lost to the No. 14 BYU Cougars 3-2 on Feb. 27.
Their most recent match was a 1-0 loss to the No. 22 Pepperdine Waves. It was an even match until the Waves broke through with a goal in the 69
th minute that proved to be the game-winner. The Dons had a chance to tie the game immediately after the goal from Pepperdine's Joelle Anderson, but the shot from Kaylin Lunsford was just high and hit the cross bar.
Portland has dominated this matchup historically with a 29-3-1 record against San Francisco. In their last game against the Dons on Oct. 26, 2019, the Pilots came out on top with a 2-1 victory at Merlo Field in double overtime. It was Michelle French's first victory over USF as Portland's head coach.
The Pilots will stay in Portland for their next matchup when they welcome the Pepperdine Waves to Merlo Field. That match is set for Friday, March 19 with a 1 p.m. kick-off.
