PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore left-hander Bradley McVay struck out 11 to lead the Portland Pilots to a 5-1 win over Utah Valley on Sunday at Joe Etzel Field to complete a four-game sweep of the Wolverines. The Pilots improve to 7-7 on the season with the victory, while Utah Valley drops to 2-9.
McVay (2-0) was dominant for the second straight start after holding Gonzaga scoreless in seven innings last weekend. On Sunday, the Milwaukee, Ore. struck out a career-high 11 batters and scattered just four hits, a walk and one run over six innings.
Freshman right-hander Jacob Dobmeier pitched the final three frames to earn his first career save. Dobmeier allowed just one hit and struck out three to close the door.
Utah Valley starter Mason Gray (0-3) held the Pilots hitless through four innings, but the floodgates opened in the fifth.
Chad Stevens drilled a line drive double over the right fielder's head with one out to start the rally. He advanced to third with two outs and then came home on a Sean Mulcare double down the right field line. Hunter Montgomery reach via error and Spencer Shipman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jake Tsukada then delivered a clutch, two-run single to left field to make it a 3-1 game.
Shipman made it 4-1 with an RBI-double in the seventh scoring Briley Knight. It marked the first career hit for the freshman who made his second start of the season at third base.
Portland added an insurance run in the eighth when Henry Cheney scored on a wild pitch.
The Wolverines spotted Gray an early 1-0 lead with a two-out double from Mitch Moralez scoring Mick Madsen from first base in the third.
Gray finished the day with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He allowed five hits and four runs (two earned).
Stevens finished 2-for-4 to college his third multi-hit game of the series. The junior shortstop was 7-for-15 with six runs scored and five RBI for the weekend.
