PORTLAND, Ore.---Goalkeeper Madison Zamora notched her third clean sheet in a row for the Pilots following 110 minutes of action and a 0-0 result against the 25th-ranked Pepperdine Waves in a West Coast Conference women's soccer match held at Merlo Field on Friday afternoon. This marks Portland's third overtime game this season and their second tie in WCC play, while Pepperdine remains undefeated during the spring conference season.
Taryn Ries produced five shots for the Pilots on the day, four of which were drilled on frame.
The Pilots (2-2-2, 1-2-2 WCC) came out with the offensive momentum to begin the game, and sophomore striker Selma Licina provided the home side's first scoring opportunity within the first five minutes, sending it towards the bottom left side of the goal. Ries found her first two chances soon after in the 15th and 19th minutes of the half, both needing to be saved by the Waves (4-2-1, 3-0-1 WCC). Both teams ended the first period with four chances to hit the back of the net, although neither could find the go-ahead goal before the end of the frame.
Portland began the second half with some of the same offensive presence, with Ries sending another shot on goal within the opening 15 seconds. The game moved up and down the field throughout, until freshman winger Sarah Kowack found Gabi Brummett near the six-yard box in the 63rd minute, although Pepperdine goalkeeper Zoe Clevely was able to come up with the save.
MJ Roe found the Pilots' next promising chance about 10 minutes later, off a Brummet corner sent towards the far post and flicked on from freshman Sophia Mattice. Mattice followed that up moments later with one of the Pilots' best scoring chances in the game, hammering a left footed screamer from about 25 yards out just over the bar. Portland's defense came up solid in the closing minutes of regulation time, and Zamora produced two clutch saves to force the extra time.
The Waves pushed the attack to open the first overtime period, and Zamora picked up two more saves before the game's final 10 minutes of action, needing to find the ball in her hands once more in order to secure the shutout tie for the Pilots.
Portland will hit the road for their next two WCC installments, first stopping in San Diego on Mar. 27th for a matchup with the Toreros. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
