SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Freshman striker Nedya Sawan scored two goals and the Portland women's soccer team recorded its fourth straight shutout in a 3-0 win against San Diego Saturday afternoon at Torero Stadium. The Pilots improve to 3-2-2 overall and 2-2-2 in West Coast Conference play with the win.
Senior goalkeeper Madison Zamora has not allowed a goal in her four starts this season and picked up her fourth straight shutout. Zamora faced 11 shots and made four saves on the day. This marks the first time Portland has recorded four consecutive shutouts since 2010, when the Pilots were ranked No. 2 nationally.
Sawan, a true freshman from Beaverton, Ore., provided more than enough offense in recording her first two collegiate goals. She wasted little time by tallying in the second minute of action. Sawan initiated the play with a quick throw-in and got the ball back deep in the corner. She cut back to her left foot and sent a long ball across the face of the goal, off the left post and in.
Her second strike came from another tough angle in the 61st minute. Sawan had space down the left side and took a few touches into the penalty area before sending in a low, hard shot past the USD goalkeeper and in off the right post.
The Pilots added an insurance goal from MJ Roe three minutes later. Roe tapped in a rebound that came off an initial shot from Gabi Brummett to cap the scoring. It was Roe's first goal of the season and third of her career and Brummett picked up her second assist this year.
The Pilots dominated possession and scoring opportunities throughout. Portland had a 10-1 advantage in shots with a 5-0 edge in corner kicks in the first half. For the game, the Pilots racked up 18 total shots with nine on goal.
Portland continues WCC play next weekend with a road match Saturday at Gonzaga.
