SPOKANE, Wash.---The Pilots defense preserved their ongoing shutout streak and have not allowed a goal in 510 consecutive minutes following a 0-0 result against Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference women's soccer match held at Luger Field on Saturday afternoon. The last time Portland registered five shutouts in a row was back in 2010 when they held the No. 2 ranking in the country.
Â
Pilots (3-2-3, 2-2-3 WCC) goalkeeper and reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Week Madison Zamora picked up her fifth clean sheet this season, and needed to make five saves against the Bulldogs (6-3-1, 4-2-1) on the day.
Â
Zamora claimed her first save of the game within the opening minutes of the first half, and freshman Sophia Mattice found Portland's only scoring opportunity of the first frame in the 15th minute with a nicely driven shot sent just over the bar.
Â
Portland came out of the halftime break with some offensive momentum, and sophomore striker Selma Licina provided the visiting team's next chance to nab the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute, off a corner sent in from Jamie Rita. The Pilots dealt with Gonzaga's pressure for the next 20 minutes, until midfielder Gabi Brummett found another shot in the 65th minute of play. Sophie French and Ellie Walker produced two more shots for Portland shortly after in the 69th and 70th minutes, but neither could find the back of the net before the end of regulation time.
Â
A trio of Pilots freshmen sparked a nice transition attack near the closing minutes of extra time, with Hannah McCord winning the ball back in Portland's defensive third to find the feet of Aubrey Turner. The midfielder sprayed it out wide to Nedya Sawan, who slipped Turner in through the Bulldogs' back line at the top of the 18-yard box. Turner's shot missed just wide right for Portland's final scoring chance of the match.
Â
The Pilots defended Gonzaga's offense well in both overtime periods, and Zamora collected her final save in the 103rd minute in order to maintain the nil-nil result.
Â
Portland will return home next week for their final home contest this season to host the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday, April 10th. The Pilots will honor this year's two seniors, Ellie Winkelmann and Madison Zamora, ahead of their final appearances on Merlo Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
