STOCKTON, Calif. – A strong performance from the pitching staff and a five-run first inning pushed the Portland Pilots past the Pacific Tigers 9-3 in the second of three games this weekend at Klein Family Field. The win clinched the series for Portland, improving their record to 9-8 overall and 2-0 in West Coast Conference play.
The pitching duo of Brad McVay and Peter Allegro shined in this one, combining for 15 strikeouts. McVay improved to 3-0 on the season after striking out seven in five innings of work. Allegro tallied eight strikeouts himself and gave up no runs or hits through the final four innings to pick up his first save.
Portland put together a solid offensive performance as well, tallying nine runs and seven hits on the night. Christian Cooney led the way for Portland at the plate. The freshman went 2-for-3 with four RBis and a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. The opposite field shot is Cooney's first of the season, making him the sixth Pilot to send a ball out of the park this year.
Portland secured a big lead early in the first inning with five runs scored, and they only needed one hit to do so. The Pilots scored first off a passed ball and then four more times off of walks with the bases load.
Pacific responded in the third with three runs in the inning. The Tigers took advantages of Portland's defensive mistakes, scoring off a wild pitch and an error by McVay. Charles Middleton hit a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the Pilots' lead to two, but the Pilots quickly built that lead back up in the fifth thanks to Cooney's two-run shot. Portland led 7-3 through five innings.
Cooney accumulated his final RBI of the night in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Sam Brown also took advantage of a passed ball by Pacific and raced home to make it 9-3 Portland. Allegro ensured the Tigers would never have a chance to get back in the game. He struck out five of Pacific's final six batters and allowed no hits in the final four innings.
The Pilots and Tigers will be back at it tomorrow with the series finale at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
