SPOKANE, Wash. – Portland picked up a 2-1 win against Gonzaga in West Coast Conference men's soccer Sunday afternoon at Luger Field. Luke Hendel converted a first half penalty and Miguel Yuste scored 20 seconds before halftime for the eventual game-winner.
Miles Robinson was in the mix and initiated both scores for the Pilots (2-2-1, 1-1-1 WCC).
"Very proud of the guys today as it's never easy to get a road win in this league," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We continue to get better and better each game and I was pleased with the performance. The group is making positive steps forward and we see that each time we get to compete. Gonzaga fought hard all game which is what you expect in these games."
Portland grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute as Robinson made a run down the left side and was tackled in the penalty area giving the Pilots a penalty kick. Hendel stepped to the stop and drilled it cleanly into the back of the net. It marked the first penalty kick awarded to the Pilots this season.
Robinson initiated the second score for Portland just before halftime. His run down the left flank led to a cross to Caua Soares in the area. Soares push a pass an unmarked Yuste at the right post for the tap in with just 20 seconds left in the first half.
The Bulldogs (2-7, 0-4) quickly cut the deficit in half 20 seconds into the second period. Gideon Davis finished from the center of the box as the ball ended up at his feet on a feed from Andres Labate.
Portland's defense would hold strong the rest of the way to secure the win.
