PORTLAND, Ore. – When the search for a new head coach for the Portland Pilots men's basketball program began, Shantay Legans stood out immediately. Even through Zoom, Portland Vice President of Athletics Scott Leykam could tell that his personality was a perfect fit in Portland. He knew the coaching was pretty solid, too, considering Legans had just taken Eastern Washington to the NCAA Tournament, almost upsetting the Kansas Jayhawks in the first round. Leykam could tell he would be a top candidate.
"Even on Zoom, it jumped through the screen," Leykam said about Legans's personality. "After the first conversation as we brought other people in on campus, it was like 'Yeah, this is very much a guy who could work at UP and have a lot of success.'"
The connection was there. Legans believed in the vision that Leykam had in mind for what the program could become. Legans acknowledged that it wasn't going to be easy. He saw the Twitter messages of people wondering why he would come to the University of Portland. He read every one of them. And those messages only served to empower Legans and emboldened his decision to become the next head coach of the Portland Pilots.
"I can't wait, because I know exactly what we're going to do" Legans said. "You have to have a chip on your shoulder. It's always going to be tough. If you don't have a chip on your shoulder, that means you're ready to get beaten up."
On Friday, Legans joined Ann Schatz for a special "Lunch with Coach Legans" to talk about his journey to Portland, giving a glimpse into his plans for the future, and more.
Before coming to Portland, Legans spent 12 years as a coach at Eastern Washington and was head coach the last four seasons. During his time at EWU, Legans helped lead the Eagles to five of its seven all-time postseason appearances, including an NCAA Tournament appearance this season. He won two Big Sky Championships and earned Big Sky Coach of the Year honors. He left Eastern Washington with the best overall (.605) and conference (.726) winning percentage in program history.
