PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland shot 70 percent from the field and cruised to a 93-73 victory over Long Beach State Wednesday at Chiles Center. The 70 percent from the field was the best by a Pilot team since shooting 72.2 percent in a 55-54 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 21, 1982 in Portland.
The Pilots (5-3) had four players score in double figures, led by freshman guard Joel Foxwell, who had 19 points, seven assists and two steals. Freshman forward Timo George added 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks from the bench and senior Matus Hronsky helped out with 16 points.
Portland racked up 26 assists on 35 made field goals, drilled 6 of 12 three-pointers and went 17 of 19 at the free throw line.
The Pilots forced 13 Long Beach State turnovers and turned those takeaways into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor.
How It Happened
A Mikah Ballew three-pointer and George layup capped an 11-2 run giving the Pilots a 15-6 edge early. Hronsky buried a three from the left wing to give Portland its largest lead at 31-16 with 7:09 remaining in the first half, but the Beach (1-6) finished the period with an 11-1 run and cut the deficit to 42-35 at the break. Hronsky finished with 12 points in the period and the Pilots shot 62 percent from the field.
Long Beach State pulled within one possession early in the second half before the Pilots rattled off a 10-2 run punctuated by a George layup in transition for a 56-44 lead. Back-to-back buckets in the paint by Foxwell pushed the margin to 79-59 and the Beach go no closer than a 16-point deficit the rest of the way.
