LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Portland sophomore forward Alex Fowler scored a game-high 26 points, but the Loyola Marymount Lions pulled out a 74-56 victory Friday at the University Credit Union WCC Tournament hosted at Orleans Arena.
Portland couldn't overcome a 10 minute second half scoreless spell when All-WCC point guard Haylee Andrews picked up her fourth foul and went to the bench. Andrews hit two free throws cut the deficit to 45-42, but she was whistled for the foul on the next possession and the Lions capitalized with an 11-0 run before Fowler converted early in the fourth quarter.
Fowler scored twice more to bring the margin back to single digits, but LMU 's Chelsey Gipson buried a quick three-pointer. Andrews made it 65-56 with a layup and 2:28 left, but Gipson answered with another big three and the Pilots (12-12) were held scoreless the rest of the way.
The Pilots could not mount a double-digit comeback win for the third straight game. Last week, the team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit the Lions (6-17) for a 73-63 win at the Chiles Center. Portland then erased a 15-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Pepperdine 101-94 in overtime on Saturday.
Friday's WCC Tournament appeared to be on a similar track as the Lions jumped out to a 16-point lead midway through the second quarter. The Pilots leaned on Fowler who delivered a personal 8-0 run to cut the margin to four late in the first half and LMU took a 41-35 lead into halftime.
Portland scored seven quick points to open the third quarter before Andrews exited and the drought began.
Fowler finished 11-for-21 from the field, grabbed four rebounds and blocked three shots on the day. Andrews still finished with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals in 25 minutes of action.
Khari Clark led three Lions with 22 points and eight rebounds. Jasmine Jones and Gipson added 13 points apiece.
LMU shot 53 percent from the field and held the Pilots to 37 percent overall. Portland also committed 19 turnovers that led to 18 LMU points.
The Lions now advance to face the No. 4-seeded Santa Clara Broncos in the WCC quarterfinals on Saturday at 11 a.m.
