SPOKANE, Wash. – A five-run first inning put the Portland Pilots in too deep a hole as they fell in their rubber match against the Gonzaga Bulldogs 8-1. The loss for Portland gave Gonzaga the series 2-1.
Once again, the bats escaped Portland as they struggled to find an offensive rhythm with just three hits. Henry Cheney had the most success on the day, going 2-for-3 from the plate. Sam Brown was the only other Pilot to register a hit.
Brett Gillis takes the loss after a difficult first inning. Gillis gave up five runs in the opening inning and was replaced before it ended by Caleb Franzen. Franzen pitched 5.1 innings for Portland and allowed three runs off four hits. He also recorded four strikeouts.
That high-scoring first inning proved to be a tone-setter for how the game would play out. Brett Harris got the scoring started by batting two runners in with a single to right field, giving Gonzaga a 2-0 lead. Harris soon found his way home via an RBI single from Tyler Rando. The Bulldogs scored twice more off a pair of sacrifice flies to lead 5-0 after one inning.
Gonzaga struck again in the fourth inning. Harris collected his third and fourth RBIs with a double to left field that put the Bulldogs up by seven. Harris also ended up being the final run of the inning by making it home off the wild pitch from Caleb Franzen. A little less than halfway through, the Pilots found themselves trailing 8-0.
The Gonzaga offense slowed down slightly as the game progressed. The Pilots used three pitchers – Franzen, Johnny Carter Connor Knutson – to slow down the Bulldogs and claw their way back into the game. Unfortunately, the offensive struggles proved to be too much during that stretch.
Portland had a chance in the final inning. Still down eight, the Pilots loaded the bases with Tracye Tammaro set to bat. A sacrifice fly to left field allowed Spencer Shipman to get home and ensured the Pilots would not be shutout. But the deficit was still too much to overcome and Portland fell 8-1.
Next up, the Pilots will travel to Seattle for a matchup against the Washington Huskies on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
