MORAGA, Calif. – Sunk by a difficult sixth inning that saw them give up 10 runs, the Portland Pilots dropped the second game in their series against the Saint Mary's Gaels 14-2. The loss evens the series and moves Portland's overall record to 12-13 and 5-3 in West Coast Conference play.
The Pilots looked primed for a good day at the plate after the first inning after taking a 2-0 lead, but the bats fell silent the rest of the afternoon. Portland had only two runs and five hits on the day. The defense had its fair share of struggles as well, with the Pilots giving up 14 runs on 12 hits and walking six batters. Christian Peters took the loss in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up four runs in that span along with five hits while striking out four.
Portland got off to a good start with a sacrifice fly from Hunter Montgomery and Sam Brown followed that up with an RBI double with a line drive to right center. Those two early scores made it 2-0 Portland, but they would be their only scores of the day.
The Gaels took advantage of some mistakes by the Pilots in the third inning to get on the board. Peters walked a batter and gave up three straight hits, allowing one run during that span. Peters then walked two more batters, bringing in two more runs for Saint Mary's and a 3-2.
Saint Mary's added to their lead in the fifth inning with a solo home run. Justin Banks stepped up to the plate and launched a ball over the right field wall to make it a 4-2 lead for the Gaels.
The Gaels blew the game wide open in the sixth inning, effectively deciding the game. The Pilots found themselves scrambling for a way to slow Saint Mary's down as they gave up 10 runs, the most they've allowed in any inning all season. Portland made three pitching changes, walked three batters and gave up seven hits. The tough sixth inning put them in a 14-2 hole that proved too much to overcome.
The Pilots and Gaels will play their rubber match tomorrow at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
