PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Portland men's basketball team held their first official practice of the summer on Tuesday. It marked the first practice since new head coach Shantay Legans took over the program back in March.
Legans was named head coach of the Pilots back in March after spending the past 12 seasons as a coach at Eastern Washington and the past four as head coach of the Eagles. Legans led the Eagles to a Big Sky regular season championship in the 2019-20 season and to the NCAA Tournament in the 2020-21 season. He also earned Big Sky Coach of the Year honors for the 2019-20 season and left Eastern Washington with the best conference winning percentage (.726) in the last 30 years.
Legans brings with him an impressive 2021 class that features numerous transfers and several stellar freshmen. Legans brought three transfers from Eastern Washington – Mike Meadows, Tyler Robertson and Jack Perry – with him to The Bluff as well as four more transfers in Kristian Sjolund, Matheus Silveira, Moses Wood and Chris Austin. The first-year coach also signed three true freshmen in Yaru Harvey, Skylar Wilson and Nikola Milosevic.
