PORTLAND, Ore. – In a match that was neck and neck most of the way, the 20
th ranked California Golden Bears pulled away from the Portland Pilots right at the end to earn a 2-0 victory. The loss drops the Pilots to 1-2-0 on the season.
Anysa Gray and Karlie Lema were the two scorers for Cal. The Golden Bears outshot the Pilots 17-9, with nine shots and eight shots in the first and second half respectively.
The match started with Cal going on the offensive. They pounced at every opening and got off five quick shots in the first 15 minutes to put Pilots on their heels. But Portland didn't let the quick-strike offense affect them, not faltering when Cal struck.
Portland found themselves bunkering in the box in order to contain the Golden Bears' attack. After doing so, the Pilots would try to put together counterattacks before Cal could recover. Portland put together a few sustained runs, but nothing substantial until late.
The Pilots finally created real opportunities as the half drew to a close, including a penalty kick in the 41
st minute. Rylee Seekins played a perfect through ball to Taryn Ries, with Ries drawing the foul in the box. Cally Togiai took the kick for Portland, but had her shot saved. The Pilots put together a pair of runs before the half closed, but the score stayed tied at zero.
The second half commenced with the Pilots as the aggressors this time, making a push towards the goal in the final third. Portland had a solid build up from the back line and managed to put together quality chances because of it.
The Pilots controlled most of the second half, but it only took one bad bounce to sink the Pilots. Cal took the ball at the top of the box, with Rilee Harmon launching a shot. Harmon's attempt was blocked, but Anysa Gray was there on the rebound. Gray slid the ball past Bre Norris that hit the right post and went into the back of the net to make it 1-0 Cal.
The Golden Bears added one more goal in the 90
th minute, with Karlie Lema taking it on the breakaway. That put the score at its final of 2-0.
Next up, the Pilots are headed up north for a pair of matches against two Seattle-based teams: the Washington Huskies and the Seattle Redhawks. They'll play the Huskies on Thursday, Sept. 2 and the Redhawks on Sept. 5. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stat and video options.
