SEATTLE, Wash. – Sophomore forward Nedya Sawan scored her third goal of the season in the 64
th minute to push the Portland Pilots past the Washington Huskies 1-0. The win puts the Pilots at 2-2 on the season.
Sawan was the lone scorer for the Pilots in this one. The goal marked the third for Sawan this year and the fifth of her career. Sawan remains the only Pilot to have scored this season.
Washington put immense pressure on the Pilots right from the start. Portland struggled to cross the midfield line with the ball while the Huskies seemingly lived in the final third. They often took the ball down the sideline searching for the perfect cross into the goal. Washington came out strong to begin the match.
The long ball was kind to the Huskies in the first half. The Huskies stuck to a simple game plan: Press the Pilots, work the ball up the right side and cross into the box with hopes of a goal. The Pilots bent, but they didn't break , with freshman keeper Bre Norris staving off the lightning quick attack from Washington and the whole backline deterring the Huskies.
Portland put together some opportunities late in the half, making their way into the final third. After almost an entire half spent defending their own goal, the Pilots were finally on the attack. But Washington stayed strong and didn't let Portland create any genuine opportunities. The score stayed tied at zero after the first 45.
The second half started much better for the Pilots. They looked more controlled in the midfield and started to put together sustained runs at the goal. Instead of constantly backpedaling to account for Washington's attack, it was Portland who looked like the aggressors.
The increased aggression finally paid off in the 64
th minute. Aubrey Turner – who helped fend off a potent Husky attack – played a perfect long rolling pass to Taryn Ries. The senior forward dribbled into the box and pulled off the no-look pass to an on-rushing Sawan. Sawan put the shot right past Olivia Sekany to earn her third goal of the year and put the Pilots up 1-0.
Washington searched desperately for the equalizer. They kept pushing to the outside and trying to cut back inside to find the easy shot. But the Pilots adjusted well defensively, pouncing quickly at every opportunity. Portland would hold on to defeat the Huskies 1-0.
The Pilots will be back in Seattle this weekend for their match against the Seattle Redhawks. The two teams will face off on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stat and video options.
