PORTLAND, Ore. -- The University of Portland men's basketball program announced the full non-conference schedule for the 2021-22 season on Thursday. The schedule features games against 14 opponents including the regular season opener at Arizona State, a road contest against Oregon and seven home games at the Chiles Center.
After their opening exhibition game against Lewis and Clark on Nov. 1 – a doubleheader with the women's team – the Pilots start their season with a trip to Tempe, Ariz. to take on the Pac-12 Arizona State Sun Devils on Nov. 9. Led by head coach Bobby Hurley, the Sun Devils have made the NCAA Tournament three times since 2014. This is just the second all-time meeting between Portland and Arizona State with the Pilots claiming a 95-78 win at home on Dec. 29, 1954.
The Pilots will be back home at the Chiles Center for the next four games. They'll play doubleheaders with the women's team on Thursday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 13. The men's team plays Willamette on Nov. 11 and Alcorn State on Nov. 13. Portland played Willamette back in 2019 and dominated at home with an 86-36 win and also played Alcorn State back in 2015, winning that game handily 97-65.
The following two home games will see the Pilots play Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 18 and Morgan State on Nov. 20. This is the first time the Pilots have ever played either opponent. Morgan State put together a solid 14-8 record last season and was the runner-up at the MEAC Basketball Tournament.
The Pilots face off against crosstown rival Portland State the following Tuesday on the road at the Viking Pavilion. The Pilots have won the last two meetings with the Vikings and own a 7-3 record against Portland State since 2010. First-year Pilot head coach Shantay Legans faced off against the Vikings seven times while serving as head coach at Eastern Washington, posting a 5-2 record against PSU.
Portland will then travel to San Antonio, Texas for a tournament hosted by Incarnate Word University. The tournament will run from Nov. 26-28 with Southeast Missouri and a a to-be-named team joinging the Pilots and host Incarnate Word. The Pilots return home for a pair of games against the Virginia Military Institute (Dec. 3) and Cal Poly (Dec. 13).
On Wednesday, Dec. 15, the Pilots will travel to Eugene, Ore. for a matchup against the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks have made the NCAA Tournament seven times since 2013 and reached the Sweet 16 in the latest edition of the tourney. During that same span, they've won the Pac-12 Tournament three times and have been crowned the regular season champs four times.
The Pilots will play their final home non-conference game against the San Jose State Spartans on Dec. 17 before finishing off their non-conference schedule with road games against the Montana State Bobcats (Dec. 19) and the UC Davis Aggies (Dec. 22). Legans faced off against the Bobcats nine times as coach at Eastern Washington, posting a 9-1 record. The Pilots and Aggies have faced off six times since 2006, with the Pilots winning five of those contests.
The Pilots are led by new head coach Shantay Legans, who has brought in an almost entirely new roster for the 2021-22 season. Legans has welcomed seven transfers, with three joining him from Eastern Washington – Mike Meadows, Tyler Robertson and Jack Perry. Matheus Silveira, Moses Wood, Chris Austin and Kristian Sjolund have also all transferred in from other Division I programs. Legans has also brought in five freshmen in Yaru Harvey, Skylar Wilson, Nikola Milosevic, Matija Svetozarevic and Vasilije Vucinic.
