NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A late goal in overtime sank the Portland Pilots as they fell to the CSUN Matadors 1-0 in Northridge. The loss snaps Portland's four-game winning streak and drops the Pilots to 5-3-0 on the season.
Giovanni Aguilar scored the winning goal for the Matadors. The goal was the second of the season for Aguilar, who also scored against another WCC opponent in the Loyola Marymount Lions.
Neither team looked perfectly fluid to start, but the Pilots had a much easier time putting together attacking chances to begin than the Matadors. They had no problem either counterattacking after stymieing CSUN's attack or slowly building up through the backline. The passes weren't always pinpoint, but their stellar defense nullified any wayward passes.
Between counterattacking and slowly building up, counterattacking proved to be Portland's most effective strategy. They were often able to catch CSUN off guard and found a few different opportunities to score. But despite those opportunities, they weren't quite able to finish chances off.
The Pilots had to play down a man the rest of the match after a red card was given to Christoforos Kourtis in the 35
th minute. That made things more difficult for the Pilots, but they were still able to manage some good counterattacks before the end of the first 45. The score remained 0-0 at the half.
The second half started and the match continued to be very physical. CSUN was given two yellow cards in just the first 15 minutes of the half after some aggressive tackles on the Pilots. Both sides battled for the ball with great aggression.
The pace increased as both teams searched for the upper hand. Both CSUN and Portland showed no fear in attacking the goal, with the Matadors notably looking stronger in the second half compared to the first. It led to increased opportunities for both sides, but neither team could find an advantage.
Both teams tried their best to find the elusive first goal, but neither would do so in regulation. CSUN put together a much stronger attack and broke the Pilots' backline a few times while Portland utilized their speed more in attempts to do the same. But ultimately, nothing would come to fruition in regulation. This one was headed to overtime.
Overtime went just about how the second half had gone, with both teams playing at a frantic pace as they searched for the golden goal. Unfortunately for Portland, it was CSUN who found it. Alex Lemus dispossessed Buba Fofanah close to Portland's goal and worked the ball forward. The ball found its way to the feet of Giovanni Aguilar, who launched a perfect curling shot to the left top corner of the goal. The ball made it past Pilots keeper George Tasouris, giving CSUN the 1-0 win over the Pilots.
Next up, the Pilots will play their biggest match of the season, playing host to the No. 3 Washington Huskies. The two teams will face off on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options and check PortlandPilots.com/Tickets for ticket options.
