PORTLAND, Ore. – The 22
nd ranked Oregon State Beavers scored two first-half goals to take down the Portland Pilots 2-0 at Merlo Field. Tyrone Mondi and Sofiane Djeffal were the goalscorers in this one. The loss drops the Pilots to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Pilots looked in control to start the match. Nothing came easy for Oregon State to start and Portland worked the sidelines well to find opportunities. Both teams had their fair share of counterattacks, but in a match where both sides played aggressively, the Pilots looked primed to come out on top.
But the Beavers struck first, scoring in the 32
nd minute. Oregon State worked the ball down to the end line and crossed it to the top of the box. Tyrone Mondi corralled the ball and crossed several Pilot defenders before rolling a shot into the back of the net to put Oregon State up 1-0.
A foul by the Pilots came back to haunt Portland in the 44
th minute. Oregon State's Sofiane Djeffal drew it for the Beavers and set up at the top of the box. He went for goal on the free kick. The Pilots deflected the shot, but George Tasouris misread the play and the ball bounced into the goal on the left side. That made it 2-0 Oregon State heading into the half.
The second half started with the Pilots earning plenty of chances on the counter, but they just couldn't capitalize. Oregon State did well to collapse on Portland once they got into the box, with the Pilots too often dribbling into traffic to no avail. The passes for Portland were just a tad bit early or late each time, which led to foiled chances too often.
Oregon State, meanwhile, had a crisp attack with several sharp, short passes to advance the ball downfield. They were able to bend Portland's defense, but the Pilots managed not to break. They continued to have strong counters, but unfortunately for Portland, they couldn't turn those chances into goals on the other end.
Portland made a final push, but it wasn't meant to be. The Pilots fell 2-0.
The Pilots will stay home for their next match as they play host to the UC San Diego Tritons. The two teams will face off on Monday, Sept. 6 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video as well as for tickets.
