PORTLAND, Ore. – In a thrilling overtime showdown between the Portland Pilots (12-4, 2-2 WCC) and the Santa Clara Broncos (9-6, 3-2 WCC), the Pilots came out on top 76-71 thanks to a big performance from Alex Fowler. The win gives Portland their 12
th of the year and their second in WCC play.
Fowler had a special night for the Pilots, putting up 32 points with 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. 10 of those points came in overtime. This game also marked her third double-double of the season and the 14
th game where she's led the Pilots in scoring. Haylee Andrews added a double-double of her own with 10 points and 10 assists along with seven rebounds while Lucy Cochrane scored 11 points.
The Townsville, Australia native's big night also moved her up the record books for the Pilots. With 1,317 points, Fowler is now eighth in career points for Pilots who only played NCAA Division I basketball. Her 13 rebounds also moved her up ninth all-time in career rebounds among Pilots who only played at the NCAA Division I level.
Fowler wasn't the only Pilot to make history. Maddie Muhlheim hit a special milestone on Saturday, surpassing 1,000 career points with a three in the first quarter. She becomes the 30
th Pilot to hit 1,000 points for her career. Last year, Muhlheim became the Pilots' all-time leader in three-pointers made. She had nine points on the night.
Santa Clara got a stellar performance from their star as well, with Lindsey VanAllen scoring 32 points while grabbing seven rebounds. While VanAllen starred, the Pilots were able to hold the Broncos to under 30% shooting from outside.
The first half was a tight affair. The Broncos started off hot from three, but the Pilots adjusted and kept them getting anything easy outside. The Pilots put together an 11-2 run in the second quarter that pushed their lead to as much as nine. The Broncos, however, took advantage of a scoring drought and brought the score within two.
The Pilots and Broncos battled for most of the second half, with lead change after lead change. The Pilots took a three-point lead with under a minute to go in the fourth thanks to a layup from Fowler and then two made free throws from Cochrane. But the Broncos answered with Lindsey VanAllen nailing the three with 1.6 seconds left. This game would head into overtime with both teams tied at 63.
Overtime began and Fowler took over for Portland. She had 10 of the Pilots' 13 points in overtime, matching every punch thrown their way. Santa Clara had their chances as time wound down, but the Pilots held on to take this one 76-71.
The Pilots did well to share the ball, accumulating 20 assists. It's the ninth time this year the Pilots have earned at least 20 assists in a game. Portland also hit 33% of their threes and got out to run offensively, scoring 12 fastbreak points.
