SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the third time this season, the Portland Pilots have swept the WCC Player of the Week awards, with winger Gurman Sangha winning offensive player of the week and goalkeeper George Tasouris winning defensive player of the week. The Pilots are the first WCC team ever to have swept the player of the week awards three times since the conference switched the new format two seasons ago.
Sangha won the award after scoring the game-winning goal in the 66th minute against the San Francisco Dons. Sangha's goal was his third of the year, putting him at 11 points with three goals and five assists. His 11 points are tied for fifth in the WCC.
Tasouris, meanwhile, earned his third shutout of the season between the pipes for the Pilots, helping him win the honor for the second time this season. He earned a critical save as well late in the match that helped keep the shutout. With the shutout, the Pilots have gone nine straight matches allowing just one goal or less, their longest such streak since 2006. He was second in the WCC in goals-against average (.847) and third in save percentage (.780).
The Pilots have dominated the WCC Player of the Week awards, winning eight of a possible 14 awards this season. Sangha and Tasouris are the first Pilots to have won multiple times this season.
Portland remains unbeaten through 11 games for the first time since 2018 at 8-0-3, ranking ninth in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches poll and fifth in the TopDrawerSoccer Top 25 poll. They'll be back in action this Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. against the Oregon State Beavers. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
