PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots soccer players Brandon Cambridge and Bre Norris have been named the U.S. Bank Student-Athletes of the Month for September. They are the first winners of the 2022-23 academic year.
Cambridge was arguably both the most productive player in the WCC and one of the most productive in the country in September, scoring an impressive six goals with four assists to total 16 points. He was first in the WCC and 13th in the country in points and was second in the conference (22nd nationally) in goals. He scored the most goals through 10 games for a Pilot in a fall season since Benji Michel in 2018.
Norris was critical in keeping the Pilots undefeated in the month of September, starting 10 games in goal and keeping the Pilots a perfect 6-0-4. Norris posted a save percentage of .933 and a goals-against average of .313. Both of those totals were first in the WCC and third in the nation. She helped the Pilots earn seven shutouts in their first 10 matches, the most for Portland through that stretch since 2009. They also posted six shutouts in a row, their longest such streak since 2010. Including October matches, Norris's .940 save percentage is first in the nation and is on pace for the best save percentage of any Pilot goalkeeper over the course of a season.
Both Pilot soccer teams are a combined 17-0-7, with the men's team at 8-0-3 and the women's team at 9-0-4. It is their best combined record since 1995. Portland is currently the only school in the country with an undefeated men's and women's soccer team, with the women's team being one of three schools still unbeaten and the men's team being one of seven. The men's team earned their highest ranking in the main college soccer polls since 1989 yesterday, coming in at sixth, while the women's team currently ranks 14th.
Both teams will be in action on the road this weekend, with the men's team taking on Oregon State this Friday at 7 p.m. and the women's team playing BYU this Saturday at 6 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
