PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots women's basketball will see their first action of the 2022-23 season on Wednesday, Nov. 2 when they welcome the Warner Pacific Knights to the Chiles Center for an exhibition game. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
The Pilots are coming off a highly successful 2021-22 campaign that saw the team go 20-11 and qualify for the WNIT for the first time since 2009. It was their second 20-win season under head coach Michael Meek and the fifth as a Division I program. Their win at home over Colorado State in the opening round of the WNIT was the first for the Pilots in the tournament and their first ever home playoff victory.
This season, the Pilots were picked to finish second in the WCC almost unanimously, earning one first-place vote. Alex Fowler and Haylee Andrews were both named to the All-WCC Preseason Team, becoming the first Pilot duo to do so three years in a row. In other preseason honors, Fowler was also named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List while Lucy Cochrane was named to the Lisa Leslie Award Preseason Watch List, which highlights the best centers in college basketball.
The Knights are coming off a season where they went 13-15 overall and 11-11 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. They finished sixth in the CCC, qualifying for their conference tournament before falling to Eastern Oregon in the first round of the CCC tournament. Last season, the Pilots and Knights faced off at the Chiles Center, with the Pilots winning 70-49.
The regular season begins for the Pilots on Monday, Nov. 7 for the Pilots in a showdown against the Willamette Bearcats. The game is part of a doubleheader with men's basketball, with the women's team playing first at 5 p.m. followed by the men's team at 7:30 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for information on how to follow along.
