SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Sophia Ramos scored a running layup in the waning seconds to give the San Diego State Aztecs (4-1) a 55-53 win over the Portland Pilots (2-2).
The Pilots (2-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Alex Fowler, who had 14 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Emme Shearer added 13 points off the bench and Lucy Cochrane added six points, 11 rebounds, two steals and four blocks.
Portland moved the ball well in Friday's game, piling up 17 assists on 20 made field goals. McKelle Meek's seven assists led the distribution list for the Pilots, just one shy of her career high. The Portland defense held San Diego State shooters to only 30.5% shooting from the field.
How It Happened
Portland struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. San Diego State kept adding to that lead, building an 18-12 advantage before Portland went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 18-17 in the second. The Pilots then kept gaining ground and tied the contest at 21-21 heading into halftime.
After intermission, Portland jumped out to a 31-30 lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Cochrane, to expand its lead further to 37-30 with 3:12 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Aztecs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pilots still entered the fourth quarter with a 39-35 edge. Portland played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
Portland led by as much as seven, but the Aztecs wouldn't go away. Ramos's layup with no time on the clock ended it for the Pilots.
