Former men's basketball standout and eventual University of Portland Athletics Hall of Famer Ray Foleen passed away on Oct. 10 at the age of 92.
Born and raised in Portland, Ray attended Vestal Grade School and graduated from Washington High School before attending UP on a full-ride scholarship for basketball, graduating with a major in physics and a minor in mathematics in 1952.
Ray concluded his time with the Pilots as the school's career scoring leader with 1,199 points and led the team to the NAIA Tournament all four seasons. The team MVP as a senior, he was inducted into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.
He served in the Navy upon graduation until his honorable discharge in 1957. He continued to serve in the Navy Reserve and retired with the rank of Commander.
Ray worked at Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) in Portland from 1958-1981. He then started his own electric power consulting business, and subsequently served as an elected executive board member with the Washington Public Power Supply System before retiring again in 1993.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Harlene; three daughters, Carla (Rick) Crinklaw, Carol Martin, and Lori Foleen; four grandchildren, Chris (Anne) Collins, Megan (Derek) Johnson, Garrett (Molly) Crinklaw and Kaley Crinklaw; and three great-grandchildren, Phifer, Mox and Lucas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Foleen.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19, at 11 a.m. at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on Monday, November 21, at 1:15 p.m.
