SAN MATEO, Calif. – Portland's Tyler Robertson and Alden Applewhite have swept the West Coast Conference Player and Freshman of the Week awards, the league office announced on Monday. The duo was instrumental in thrusting the Pilots into the national spotlight with a thrilling performance at the Phil Knight Invitational.
Portland knocked off national power Villanova (83-71) and took No. 1 North Carolina and No. 12 Michigan State down to the wire before coming up just short in both games.
Robertson averaged 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists over the three games, while Applewhite contributed 12.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in critical minutes off the bench.
The Pilots tipped off the tournament against top-ranked UNC on Thanksgiving and led for most of the second half. Robertson scored all 13 of his points in the contest after halftime, but the Tar Heels made big plays late to hold on for an 89-81 victory. Applewhite finished with a then-career high 14 points off the bench.
In Friday's victory over Villanova Robertson stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. He added 16 points, seven rebounds and nine assists against Michigan State.
Applewhite, a Memphis, Tenn. native that came to Portland after a brief stop at Mississippi State, made all 14 of his free throw attempts over the weekend and shot 52.4 percent from the field over the three games. He upped his career high with 16 points off the bench against the Spartans on Sunday.
The Pilots (5-4) will now begin a four-game homestand on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Multnomah. Other upcoming home games include Dec. 3 vs. North Dakota, Dec. 5 vs. North Dakota State and Dec. 10 vs. New Orleans.
