SAN MATEO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots women's soccer team had two players make the WCC All-Academic First Team: Goalkeeper Bre Norris and forward Nedya Sawan. This is the first selection for Norris and the second for Sawan. Eight Pilots earned honorable mention as well, with Aubrey Turner, Colby Wilson, Camille Ashe, Emily Collier, Cally Togiai, Elianna Wong, MJ Roe and Selma Licina all getting recognized.
In order to qualify for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 while also having been an important reserve or starter who played in at least 50% of their team's games. Each nominee also must hold at least sophomore academic standing with at least one year in residence with the nominating team.
Norris made the team with a 3.92 GPA as an integrative health and wellness major. Norris was stellar between the pipes this season, posting an .849 save percentage with 90 total saves and an .818 goals-against average. Her save percentage led the WCC and ranked 21st nationally. Her 11 shutouts ranked seventh nationally and first in the conference and were also the most by a Pilot since 2009. Her save total was also the third most in a single season by a Pilot.
Sawan makes the team for the second year in a row after posting a 3.93 GPA as a psychology major. Sawan was third on the team in total points this year with 12 after scoring five goals and adding two assists. She scored a goal and added an assist in Portland's first NCAA Tournament match since 2013, a 3-0 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The Pilots are coming off their best season in nine years, having made the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2013. They advanced to the second round of the tournament and finished with a 12-5-4 record overall. They had four players earn All-WCC honors in Norris, Shay Adams, Cally Togiai and Isabella Yakel as well. Adams and Norris each made All-West Region teams as well.
