RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Alden Applewhite scored a career-high 20 points for Portland, but the UC Riverside Highlanders capitalized on a 24-2 edge in second chance points to pull out a 76-65 victory Thursday at SRC Arena.
Applewhite added three steals to his 20 point game to lead the Pilots (8-7). Tyler Robertson helped out with 13 points and Vasilije Vucinic chipped in with 12 points.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 6-5 advantage, Portland went on a 7-0 run with 17:40 left in the first half to increase its lead to 13-5. The Pilots then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-35 advantage.
UC Riverside proceeded to take a 37-36 lead before Portland went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Applewhite's three, to seize a 42-37 lead with 18:07 to go in the contest. UC Riverside re-asserted control, outscoring the Pilots 39-23 the rest of the way to hand Portland the 76-65 loss.
Game Notes
» Alden Applewhite led the Pilots with a game-high 20 points.
» Portland got five rebounds from both Vasilije Vucinic and Moses Wood.
» The Pilots shot 48 percent from the floor and held UCR to 44 percent, but the Highlanders attempted 24 more field goals in the game.
» Zyon Pullin led the way for UCR with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.
