MALIBU, Calif. -- Maisie Burnham scored 21 points and Alex Fowler added 20 as the Portland Pilots beat the Pepperdine Waves 86-76 on the road Saturday.
The Pilots (10-5, 4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Burnham, who had 21 points and six rebounds. Fowler tacked on seven rebounds, six assists and two steals along with 20 points while Emme Shearer and Haylee Andrews chipped in 17 and 15 points respectively.
Portland forced 21 Pepperdine turnovers and turned those takeaways into 22 points on the offensive end. Andrews' three steals led the way for Portland.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-8, Portland went on a 7-0 run with 4:19 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Fowler, to tie the game at 15. Pepperdine then pulled ahead, sending the Pilots into the second quarter down 24-18.
Pepperdine kept adding to that lead, building a 37-26 advantage before Portland went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Andrews that narrowed the deficit to 37-34. The Pilots continued to chip away, reducing the Pepperdine lead to 41-40 heading into the break.
Portland took the lead with a 6-0 run that made it 48-44 Pilots. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Waves had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pilots still entered the fourth quarter with a 60-58 edge. Portland played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.
Portland kept widening that lead, expanding it to 66-62 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Liana Kaitu'u's layup, to grow the lead to 72-62 with 6:55 to go in the contest. The Pilots held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 86-76 win.
