PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (1-0) started the 2022 season in style with a dominant 12-2 win over the Creighton Bluejays (0-1).
Ben Patacsil was the top batter for the Pilots, going 5-for-5 with a home run and two RBI's on the day. Patacsil's five hits were just one shy of the single-game record, and he is one of just 10 Pilots to hit that total. Sam Brown also added a home run, going 1-for-4 at the plate. Ty Saunders and Nich Klemp were the only other batters to earn multiple hits on Friday, with Saunders batting 3-for-4 with four RBI's and Klemp going 2-for-4.
Eli Morse impressed on the mound in his first action of 2022, going six innings with only two runs allowed and eight strikeouts. Nick Nygard did cleanup duty for Portland, pitching three innings with four strikeouts and no hits allowed. Morse gets credited with the win while Creighton starter Dylan Tebrake takes the loss.
The Pilots started the scoring in the second inning. With a runner in scoring position, Patacsil lined a single to center field that brought in Klemp for an unearned run. Tebrake then walked a runner with the bases loaded to make it 2-0 Portland.
Sam Brown added to Portland's lead in the third inning. Brown hit the first homer of the new season, launching a solo moon shot over the right field wall that put the Pilots up three. But Creighton responded the following inning with a two-run shot from Jared Wegner. The Bluejays trailed by just one.
But that didn't last long, as the Pilots hit another solo shot to put the score at 4-2. Patacsil once again scored the run for the Pilots. Portland wouldn't stop there, adding an RBI single in the fifth inning from Saunders following the sacrifice fly from Gabe Skoro to make it 6-2 Pilots.
The Pilots exploded in the final two innings they. They batted in six runs in the seventh and eighth innings, leaving Nygard plenty of lead to work with. The Pilots ousted the final three batters with ease, giving Portland the 12-2 win.
The Pilots and the Bluejays will play two seven-inning games tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
