PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Robertson converted a three-point play with less than thirty seconds remaining to lift the Portland Pilots to a 77-74 victory over Pepperdine on Saturday. The Pilots improved their win streak to five games in the thriller before an announced crowd of 2,409 on Senior Night at the Chiles Center.
With the win, the Pilots (16-12, 6-6 West Coast Conference) have guaranteed at least a .500 record for the first time since the 2014-15 season (17-16) in the first year under head coach Shantay Legans and won four straight league games for the first time since that same year.
Moses Wood led the Pilots with a career-high 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals and blocked shots. He drilled 5-of-10 three-pointers to raise his season three-point percentage to a team-best 44.4 percent.
Robertson continued his stellar run by playing all 40 minutes and finishing with 22 points and nine assists on 9-of-14 shooting. Robertson and Wood combined to score 28 of Portland's 40 second half points.
The win came through adversity against a Pepperdine squad that played No. 1 Gonzaga tough on Wednesday and shot 11-of-20 from three-point range for the game. Without starting point guard Mike Meadows and sixth man Matija Svetozarovic for the second straight game, Portland's starters logged big minutes again.
Despite leading for nearly 28 minutes and sporting an 11-point lead midway through the second half, the Pilots found themselves trailing by four after Mike Mitchell Jr.'s step back three-pointer with 1:12 left. Robertson quickly drew a foul and converted both free throws and the Pilots got a big defensive stop when Chris Austin blocked Mitchell's runner at the end of the shot clock.
Robertson drove hard to the right and banked home an off-balance runner and drew a foul with 27 seconds remaining. He drilled the ensuing free throw – his 34th consecutive made free throw – to put the Pilots ahead 75-74.
Pepperdine went to Jan Zidek on the final possession, but the Pilots forced him into a tough shot. Victor Ohia Obioha got the offensive rebound, but his putback attempt was blocked by Moses Wood and Kristian Sjolund grabbed the rebound in traffic and was fouled. He knocked down both free throws with five seconds left in regulation and Portland forced a Houston Mallette prayer that missed at the buzzer to send the crowd into a frenzy.
The Waves (7-22, 1-13) shot 48 percent from the field, 55 percent from three-point range and made 9-of-10 free throws overall, while the Pilots struggled to 7-of-30 from three-point range. Portland entered the game ranked second nationally in free throw percentage and were clutch again at the line going 12-for-13.
The Pilots were able to create driving lanes and outscore Pepperdine by a 40-22 margin in the paint and 18-11 in points off turnovers. Portland forced 17 Waves turnovers and committed just six.
Zidek finished with 22 points for Pepperdine, while Mallette and Mitchell added 18 and 17 points, respectively.
The Pilots recognized grad transfer Jack Perry, senior walk-ons Miles Turner and Wyatt Watson and team manager Andrew Bitrous pregame as part of Senior Night.
Portland will look to extend its winning streak on the road at Pacific and Santa Clara next week to close out the regular season. The Pilots last six-game win streak came during the 2008-09 season, which is also the last time the team won five consecutive WCC games. If Portland can manage at least a road split, the program will have its first .500 or better WCC record since the 2010-11 season (7-7).
Tip-off at Pacific is Thursday at 7 p.m. and the Pilots and Broncos close out the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m.
