SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (16-8, 6-6 WCC) dropped their third game in a row, falling to the Santa Clara Broncos (14-11, 8-7 WCC) 76-66 at the Leavey Center. The Pilots drop to .500 in WCC play.
Four Pilots scored in double digits for Portland, with Maisie Burnham leading the way. Burnham had 17 points and 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. This is Burnham's fifth game in a row leading the Pilots in scoring. Rose Pflug matched her career-high as a Pilot with 16 points while Alex Fowler and Lucy Cochrane added 14 and 12 respectively. Fowler had six rebounds and eight assists, with her assists matching her career-high.
Lindsey VanAllen was the high scorer for the game with 24 points. The Broncos as a team shot an even 50% from the field and from behind the arc.
The Pilots were hot to start the game, shooting an impressive 71.4% from the field in the first quarter. But the Broncos bounced back in a big way the following quarter, holding the Pilots to just four made field goals while scoring 19 points of their own. The result was a Pilot lead conceded to the Broncos, as Portland trailed 37-32 at the half.
The third quarter was slightly in the Pilots' favor. They outscored the Broncos 19-15 and made 63.6% of their shots. But Santa Clara turned up the heat in the fourth quarter and took over in the final eight minutes. After Portland extended their lead to five, the Broncos went on a 12-0 run to take over and never ceded the lead after that. Santa Clara ended the game on another 12-0 run and eventually shut down the Pilots 76-66.
Portland was solid offensively from the field, making 57% of their looks overall, 36% of their shots from behind the arc and 91% of their free throws. Portland's 21 assists even marked the 11
th game with 20 assists or more. But the Broncos' hot shooting from outside made them difficult to contain as they went 9-for-18 from three-point range.
The Broncos' ability to capitalize off turnovers also made a difference. Santa Clara scored a whopping 36 points off turnovers against the Pilots, who turned it over 18 times on the day. The Broncos' 17 second-chance points also proved valuable.
