MORAGA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (17-8, 7-6 WCC) snapped a three-game skid against the Saint Mary's Gaels (13-14, 7-9 WCC) with an 89-84 win in Moraga. The win was Portland's sixth in a row against the Gaels.
Alex Fowler was the leading scorer for Portland with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting. It's her seventh game scoring 20 points or more this season. Fowler also had eight rebounds and five assists and moved up to sixth all-time for the Pilots in career points.
Maddie Muhlheim also impressed with her best scoring game of the season, putting up 19 points with five made threes. Rose Pflug scored 16 points as well with a team-high five assists. Her 16 points matches her career high. Defensively, Lucy Cochrane had four blocks to bring her eight blocks within the school record for blocks in a season. Emme Shearer also had an impressive four steals.
Taycee Wedin led the way for Saint Mary's with 21 points. Her five threes put her just five makes away from the WCC record for threes in a career. Maddie Holland also added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Both teams were hot from the field in the first half. The Pilots and Gaels each made seven threes in the opening 20 minutes. But the Gaels were hot from all over the field, shooting 59% from the field overall to the Pilots 41%. The Gaels put together a 6-0 run at the end of the second to take a 40-33 lead.
The third quarter was all Pilots as they were unstoppable from the field. They scored a season-high 33 points in the third quarter, outscoring the Gaels by 13 to give themselves a six-point lead heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw the Gaels come out strong, challenging the Pilots and eventually retaking the lead, but the Pilots didn't let that deter them, as they held Saint Mary's without a field goal in the final five minutes of the game. After shooting their way to victory in the first three quarters, the Pilots grinded out a victory in the final quarter, taking one on the road 89-84.
The Pilots had their best shooting night of the season from outside. Their 12 made threes were a season-high and just three shy of tying the school record. At 50%, they shot their best percentage from outside as well.
Once again, the Pilots also had no problem sharing the rock with 24 assists, their second-highest total on the season. The combined total of 173 points is the highest in a Pilot game this season.
The Pilots will finish the regular season at home with games against the San Diego Toreros and the Pepperdine Waves. They'll play the Toreros on Thursday at 7 p.m. before facing off against the Waves on Saturday at 12 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
