PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (18-9, 8-7 WCC) ended the regular season on a high note against the Pepperdine Waves (8-16, 4-11 WCC) with a big 85-49 win. The Pilots finish the year with 18 wins for the third time since the 2009-10 season and their best record through 27 games since the 1997-98 season.
Alex Fowler stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. It's her fifth double-double of the season. Rose Pflug also ended her career at the Chiles Center on a high note with a career-high 17 points. Cheyenne Givens scored a team-high 16 points for the Waves.
Lucy Cochrane made history for the Pilots. With her seven blocks on the day, Cochrane set the program record for most blocks in a season with 100. The record-breaking block came in the final minute of the third quarter. It was also her eighth game this season with five blocks or more. Cochrane has led the nation in blocks per game for most of the season at 3.9 a contest.
Before the game, the Pilots took time to recognize three players – Haylee Andrews, Alex Fowler and Maddie Muhlheim – who reached 1,000 career points either last season or earlier this year as well as their two seniors – Muhlheim and Pflug.
The first half was one of the best offensive halves of the season for Portland as they tied their season-high of 50 points. They outscored the Waves 29-9 in the first quarter and followed that up with 21 points the next quarter. Portland made six threes in the half and forced 14 turnovers as they cruised to a 50-28 first half lead.
The Waves adjusted in the second half, outscoring the Pilots 14-10 in the third. But the Pilots had built to big of a lead for themselves and closed the game strong with an 21-3 run in the final quarter to win 85-49.
The Pilots lit it up from three-point range, shooting 10-for-21 from outside for a 48% hit rate. Their ability to capitalize on offensive rebounds was also critical, as they got 28 second chance points. Their 25 assists were tied for the second-highest total they've reached this season and also mark the 12
th time they've had 20 assists or more in a game.
Portland was menacing defensively, forcing 24 total turnovers with 20 steals. Those 20 steals were the most against a WCC team this year and the second most in a game overall. Six Pilots had two steals or more and four Pilots had at least three steals. As a team, the Pilots also had nine blocks.
