PORTLAND, Ore. – Logan Johnson scored a game-high 17 points and the Saint Mary's Gaels held Portland to its lowest scoring output of the season in a 75-54 West Coast Conference win Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
Tyler Robertson paced the Pilots (11-11, 2-5 WCC) with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Mike Meadows was the only other Portland player to reach double figures and finished with 10 points. Freshman forward Chika Nduka grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Matthias Tass and Kyle Bowen added 12 and 11 points, respectively for the Gaels (18-4, 6-1) who extended their winning streak to six games.
Saint Mary's entered the game holding opponents to a WCC-best 58.5 points per game, which also ranks No. 7 in the nation. The stingy defense was on prominent display Thursday at the Gaels held Portland to 40 percent shooting, 2-of-7 from three-point range and forced 16 turnovers.
Despite the offensive struggles, the Pilots were within three points at 39-36 early in the second half after a three-point play from Meadows.
Saint Mary's then used an 11-0 run highlighted be three-pointers from Kyle Bowen, Tommy Kuhse and Alex Ducas to push the margin to 14 points and the Pilots would get no closer than 12 the rest of regulation.
The Gaels shot 44 percent from the field and knocked down 12-of-34 three-pointers while committing just seven turnovers.
Saint Mary's raced out to an early 14-point lead after four straight points from Tass midway through the first half. Portland responded with an 8-0 run sparked by a pair of layups from freshman reserve guard Yaru Harvey. Robertson made a driving layup to make it a 34-28 deficit at the half.
The Pilots will be back in action on Saturday with another doubleheader on The Bluff. The Pilot women, coming off an upset win over No. 16 BYU on Thursday, will host LMU at 2 p.m. followed by the men versus San Francisco at 5 p.m. Both games will be televised locally on Portland's CW and tickets are available by visiting
