PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (15-5, 5-3) bounced back from their Saturday loss to the Loyola Marymount Lions (8-13, 3-8 WCC) with a 64-49 win in their rematch. The win gives Portland 15 wins, surpassing their total from last season.
Maisie Burnham was the leading scorer for the Pilots with 15 points off the bench. The total matches her previous scoring high since she joined the Pilots from Eastern Washington. Maddie Muhlheim also matched her season-high for threes with four, scoring 12. Lucy Cochrane was the only other Pilot to cross the double-digit threshold with 10.
Ariel Johnson once again led the Lions in scoring with 15, nine of those points coming from the free throw line. As a team, the Lions went 19-for-23 from the charity stripe.
The first quarter was a grind for both sides, with the Pilots holding the Lions to just 22% shooting. The Pilots created some separation for themselves once they got the three-point shot going. Muhlheim hit two threes in the quarter while Rose Pflug and Burnham added shots from outside as the Pilots took a 30-18 lead at the half.
The Lions kept pace with the Pilots in the third quarter, but keeping pace doesn't help when trailing. The Lions found their way to the free throw line plenty, but the Pilots relentless energy paid off down the stretch. They kept LMU in check and went on to win 64-49 for their 15
th win this year.
The Pilots' adjustments defensively helped them take this one. After allowing the Lions to shoot almost 60% from the field last game, the Pilots held LMU to just 36.5% shooting on the day, with no threes allowed for the second game in a row. The Pilots also forced 18 turnovers and 10 steals. This is the fifth game this year where they've held an opponent under 50 points.
Portland didn't shoot much better themselves at only 35.7%, but their relentlessness on the boards made the difference. They had 18 offensive rebounds and 17 second chance points. They outrebounded the Lions overall 39-34. Portland also had 17 assists on the night.
Next up, the Pilots will stay home for the fourth game in a row, welcoming the Saint Mary's Gaels to the Chiles Center. The two teams will play on Thursday, Feb. 10 with tipoff at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and a stream.
