PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team swept the Eastern Washington Eagles 7-0 Saturday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots won for the third straight match to improve to 3-4 on the year, while the Eagles dropped to 2-10 overall.
The Pilots swept the doubles point with comfortable wins in all three matches. Sema Pankin and Eleftherios Neos won 6-1 at No. 1 and then Nicolas Ocana and Issa Yoshida clinched at No. 3 by a 6-3 margin. The No. 2 tandem of Julien Penzlin and Nikolas Tvedt also won by a 6-3 margin.
Portland then won all six singles matches in straight sets. Pankin cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top of the order against Wout Doumen. Neos defeated Jeremy Mueller 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and then Issa Yoshida clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Manuel Balce at No. 3.
Tvedt, Ocana and Oscar Brown completed the sweep with straight set wins in the final three spots in Portland's lineup.
"It was nice getting another win today and to get some matches under our belts," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We have a tough stretch coming up and want to perform at our highest level going into this portion of the season. We will have to play well to win against the upcoming opponents and conditions. That makes a little easier just to focus on playing good tennis and knowing the results will come. Without these last couple of matches I think it would have been much more difficult to gauge where we need to adjust going into this stretch, so these were really good for us.
"I know the guys are really looking forward to the challenge of Oregon and then road matches against BYU and San Diego. This is when our season starts to heat up and we are all looking forward to these challenges."
Portland will conclude the weekend with a road match at Oregon on Sunday at 11 a.m. Live scoring and video links are available at
