PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (12-5, 0-1 WCC) dropped their first WCC game of the season against the BYU Cougars (10-5, 1-0 WCC), falling 6-2.
Caleb Franzen took the loss after giving up four runs in five innings of work. He did, however, strike out 10 batters, which matches the season high for any Pilot this season. It's also a career high for Franzen. Jack Sterner took the win for BYU.
Ben Patacsil and Sam Brown were the only batters to record multiple hits on the day. Patacsil went 2-for-3 on the day while Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run. Evan Scavotto, Gabe Skoro and Ty Saunders were the only other Pilots to record a hit.
Both teams went scoreless in the first two innings before BYU started the scoring in the third inning. Mitch McIntyre hit an RBI triple to bring in a run and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
BYU followed that up with three runs in the fifth inning, with two coming off an RBI double from Andrew Pintar and another off the RBI single from Ryan Sepede. The Cougars had a 4-0 lead through five.
The Pilots managed to score in the bottom of the inning. A throwing error on BYU's part allowed Gabe Skoro to reach home. Portland was finally on the board after five innings of play.
The scoring slowed down a bit, with the Pilots having their chances. They loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with no outs, but couldn't bring anyone home. BYU capitalized on the missed opportunity by Portland, scoring two runs. One run came on the RBI single from Austin Deming and the next came off a sacrifice fly by Watkins. BYU led 6-1 through eight.
Brown gave the Pilots a little life with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, his second of the season. However, it was too little too late, as the Pilots fell 6-2.
The Pilots and Cougars will be back at it tomorrow at 2 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
