SAN MATEO, Calif. – University of Portland men's basketball had two players garner All-West Coast Conference honors with Tyler Robertson named to the second team and Moses Wood picking up honorable mention recognition. All awards were determined by votes from the league's ten head coaches.
Gonzaga's Drew Timme took home WCC Player of the Year honors, while teammate Chet Holmgren was named the Newcomer of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Saint Mary's picked up the other two major awards with guard Tommy Kuhse named Sixth Man of the Year and Randy Bennett Coach of the Year.
Robertson, a sophomore transfer from Eastern Washington, had some incredible performances in leading the Pilots to their first .500 or better WCC season since 2011. He posted a remarkable 31-point, 11-rebound, 11-assist triple-double in a Feb. 12 win over LMU to join teammate Mike Meadows as the only players in program history to record a triple-double. Robertson became the only NCAA Division I player in the last 25 years to log a 30-point triple-double, make 5-plus threes without a miss (5-for-5) and drill 10-plus free throws without a miss (10-for-10). No other player has achieved all those marks in an entire career, let alone all in one game.
The Melbourne, Australia native averaged 14.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in league play. He led the WCC in minutes played (36.9), was second in assists and free throw percentage (.862) and third in steals per game (1.7) in 14 conference contests.
Wood, a redshirt sophomore transfer from UNLV, was Portland's leading scorer in league play and ranked ninth in the WCC at 15.1 points per game. He was also seventh in rebounding (6.8) and sixth in free throw percentage (.821). Wood scored 20 or more points in four times during the league season and finished strong by averaging 21.0 points on 54 percent shooting over the final four games.
Portland finished the regular season with a 17-13 overall record and 7-7 mark in league play during head coach Shantay Legans' first year on The Bluff. The 17 wins match the most since the 2014-15 Portland team finished at 17-16 overall.
The Pilots are the No. 6 seed in this week's
University Credit Union WCC Basketball Tournament and after a first round bye will play the winner of No. 7 San Diego and No. 10 Pepperdine on Friday at 8 p.m. The game will be aired on ROOT Sports NW and have live radio coverage on 1080 The Fan (KFXX).
