CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (20-11, 8-7 WCC) saw their season end at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis on Sunday as the Oregon State Beavers (16-13, 6-9 Pac-12) defeated the Pilots 74-56 in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
Maddie Muhlheim led the Pilots in scoring in her final game as a Pilot with 14 points off four made threes. Alex Fowler was the only other Pilots score in double digits with 10 points along with seven rebounds. Rose Pflug also added nine points.
Four different Beavers scored in double figures on Sunday, with Kennedy Brown leading the way. She had 16 points off the bench along with four rebounds and four assists. Jelena Mitrovic posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, Taya Corosdale scored 12 points and Ellie Mack added 11.
The Pilots and Beavers were neck-and-neck for most of the first quarter, with the Beavers somewhat holding control but only leading by three after one. A big 13-2 run to start the second quarter shifted the momentum for the Beavers. Muhlheim scored 11 points in the quarter, helping the Pilots keep it manageable, but the Beavers still led 42-34 after the first half.
Portland came out strong in the third quarter. They locked the Beavers down defensively and went on a drawn-out 10-2 run that brought them within two. The Pilots wouldn't score again, however, in the third quarter, as the Beavs went on an 11-0 run to go up 13. After that, Oregon State didn't give the Pilots an inch the rest of the way and won 74-56.
The Beavers were locked in offensively, making 56% of their shots from the field and 46% of their shots from outside. Those numbers came off 23 assists. Their 30 points off the bench and 38 points in the paint also proved to be deciding factors in this one. Oregon State outrebounded Portland as well 39-24.
Despite the loss, the Pilots still put together one of the best seasons in recent program history. They finish with a 20-11 record, marking the second time in three years that head coach Michael Meek has led the Pilots to at least 20 wins. This is just the fifth time since the Pilots became an NCAA Division I school that they've earned at least 20 wins in a season. It's also the best record for the Pilots since the 1996-97 season.
During the regular season, the Pilots finished fourth in the WCC, marking the second top-five finish for the Pilots since Meek took over as head coach. Portland advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Tournament for the second time in three years. The Pilots also earned their first ever win in the WNIT just this past Friday.
